Description: Definitions for Township purposes:a.Rain Garden – a linear landscaped swale along the side of a road or pathway, draining into a lawn basin at the low end. Along roadways, they are accompanied by flat-panel curbs or frequent curb cuts. Rain gardens in the Township definition do not have an underdrain (see infiltration swale). b.Infiltration Swale system – a vegetated, grassed or gravel swale along the side of a road or pathway, designed to infiltrate runoff into an underlying rock-filled trench which has a perforated pipe (underdrain). Excess runoff drains into a lawn basin. In urban areas, they are accompanied by flat-panel curbs or frequent curb cuts. In rural areas, they are part of the road shoulder. If they do not have an underlying trench, they are drainage swales or rain gardens; if they are over a trench but it has no perforated pipe, they are rain gardens. Three features define it – runoff is designed to infiltrate into it from a surface swale, the runoff seeps into a rock-filled trench, and it has a collection/distribution pipe.
